Best Airport for Split, Croatia: Your Travel Guide
So you've decided to visit Croatia, what's next?
Planning your dream Croatian cruise adventure with us? Excellent choice! Your journey to the beautiful Dalmatian coast probably starts with a flight, and Split serves as the perfect starting point. But with several airports in the region, which one should you choose? Let’s break down the options to ensure a smooth start to your unforgettable cruise.
Split Airport (SPU): The Obvious Choice
- Proximity: Split Airport (Resnik Airport) is by far the most convenient option. Located just 25 kilometres (approximately 16 miles) from Split city centre and the main port, it’s a short transfer to your cruise ship.
- Accessibility: Numerous airlines, including budget carriers and major European airlines, offer direct flights to Split Airport, especially during the peak summer season.
- Transfer Options: You’ll find readily available taxis, ride-sharing services, and airport shuttle buses that whisk you from Split airport directly to the port.
- Cons: During peak season, Split Airport can become very busy.
Why Split Airport is Ideal for Our Cruise Guests:
- Minimizes travel time and stress after a long flight.
- Allows you to quickly settle in and begin exploring Split before your cruise departs.
- Easiest access to the port for a seamless embarkation.
Alternative Airports (Consider These Only If…):
While Split Airport is the most convenient, here are a couple of alternative airports you might consider under specific circumstances:
- Zadar Airport (ZAD):
- Located approximately 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Split.
- Can be a viable option if you find significantly cheaper flights or if your itinerary includes pre-cruise exploration of Zadar.
- However, be prepared for a longer transfer (around 1.5 to 2 hours by bus or private transfer) to Split.
- Consider this if your flight arrives late, and you plan to stay overnight in Zadar before travelling to Split.
- Dubrovnik Airport (DBV):
- Located approximately 230 kilometers (143 miles) south of Split.
- Generally not recommended for cruises departing from Split due to the long transfer time (around 3 to 4 hours).
- Only consider this if you are combining your cruise with a longer trip in southern Croatia and plan to travel to Split several days before your cruise.
- The coastal road between Dubrovnik and Split can be very busy during the summer.
Our Recommendation:
For the most convenient and stress-free start to your Croatian cruise, we strongly recommend flying directly into Split Airport (SPU). This will allow you to maximize your time in Split and minimize travel time, allowing you to relax and enjoy the beginning of your cruise adventure.
6 Tips for Booking Your Flights:
- Book your flights well in advance, especially if travelling during the peak summer season.
- Consider flying on weekdays or during off-peak hours for potentially lower fares.
- Compare prices from different airlines and airports.
- Factor in transfer times and costs when making your decision.
- Always check the baggage allowance of your chosen airline.
- If you plan to arrive a day early, book accommodation close to the Split port.
